About the Role

The Peninsula Practice is looking for a healthcare assistant (HCA) to join the practice in this vital patient-facing role with both clinical and administrative responsibilities. The role is offered on a part-time basis, for 16 hours per week.

We would be very happy to have an informal conversation about the role, the available hours and how these could potentially be structured to suit both the successful candidate and the needs of the practice.

Main duties of the role:
  • Carry out base-line observations such as pulse, oximetry, temperature, blood pressure and blood glucose levels, recording findings accurately
  • Wound care, venepuncture, phlebotomy checks and administering of medicines and vaccines
  • Injections - shingles, pneumo, B12, flu, covid 
  • Ensure that all clinical rooms are adequately stocked and prepared for each session
  • Update patient health records
  • Ensure that medical supplies are in stock
  • Act as a chaperone where required
  • Assist GP during the performance of minor operations
  • Communicate with patients, relatives, and carers including providing valuable health promotion and education
  • New patient health checks
  • NHS health checks
  • Long term condition reviews

About the Candidate

The healthcare assistant role within general practice can be very different to the role within other settings and as such we are only looking for applications from those with previous primary care experience. All applicants should ensure that they live within reasonable commuting distance.
 
All applicants should have the following skills and qualifications:
 
Qualifications and experience - these are a requirement to be considered for the role:
  • Successful completion of the Care Certificate, or willingness to undertake, as indicated by the CQC
  • Level 3 Diploma in Health and Social Care, or equivalent
  • Phlebotomy certificate 
  • Experience of working within a GP practice
 Essential knowledge, skills and experience:
  • Strong clinical skills including venepuncture/phlebotomy
  • Excellent patient-facing communication and interpersonal skills
  • Confidential manner with a compassionate and respectful approach, placing a high value on the dignity of patients, relatives, carers and colleagues
  • Ability to work independently, determining own workload priorities, as well as working as part of a multi-disciplinary team
  • Strong organisational and time management skills

About Us

The Peninsula Practice is a friendly rural practice serving communities across the beautiful Suffolk peninsula.

We operate across three sites:

  • Alderton Health Centre, Mill Hoo, Alderton, Woodbridge, Suffolk, IP12 3DA
  • Orford Surgery, Rectory Road, Orford
  • Aldeburgh Surgery, Victoria Road, Aldeburgh

We are a mixed dispensing and non-dispensing practice, with dispensaries operating from two of our sites.

Our established clinical team currently includes 2 GP Partners and 5 Salaried GPs, supported by a highly skilled and experienced nursing team and wider multidisciplinary workforce.

We pride ourselves on providing support and a 'can do' approach within our practice team, encouraging everyone to be a leader, and in turn to be able to provide high-quality, patient-centred care to our rural population. We work closely and collaboratively with our PCN and wider community services.
